After grabbing an Uber, I went to Shannon’s place to get my car and bag that I didn’t end up needing anyway. Not wanting to make the same mistake twice, I knocked instead of barging in.

“Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in. What happened last night, eh?” Xan opened the door, more appropriately dressed than last time.

“I don’t want to talk about it. But I need to get my bag and go. An emergency came up.”

Not letting it drop, she pulled me inside. “What do you mean you don’t want to talk about it? Is it bad?”

I wouldn’t kiss and tell, but I also wasn’t ready to rehash my feelings about having to leave Steph. So I went with a vague, “Good and bad.” That pretty much covered everything: being with Steph was amazing, leaving Steph was heartbreaking, and dealing with Cam would be downright miserable.

Eyeing me with that sad little face she always had, she said, “I won’t push. But you’re okay, yeah?” Even if we hadn’t been around each other in a while, she could still read me, and I knew she could tell I wasn’t ready to talk about it.

“I will be, but right now, I have to head back… long drive and all.”

“Don’t I know it? Well, I hate we didn’t get to do much. Maybe you could come back again and stay a little longer? Or…”

I was unsure where that or was going. “I might be able to do that. Are you and Shannon good? I wasn’t hopeful after how the night ended.”

Her pouty face went to one of sheer happiness in a matter of seconds, and I put up my stop hand because I didn’t want to know.

“What? I didn’t even say anything.”

“Your face said everything. You should never play poker.” I walked to the couch where my bag was still lying and grabbed it.

“Whatever. I plead the fifth. But let’s say—”

“No. Let’s don’t and say we did. I saw enough on my own. I do not need another visual like that in my head. It’ll forever be burned in my memory, and I gotta say, I wish it wasn’t.”

She let out a snort that turned into a laugh, and I couldn’t help but join her.

Once we settled down, I asked, “Is Shannon here? I’d like to say bye before I leave.”

“Nah, she and Leia were doing something. I didn’t ask.” She put her hand on my shoulder. “Well, I guess this is it? I’m sure I’ll be talking to you, but I wish you luck, buddy. You know I’m here if you need anything, yeah?”

Giving her a one-armed hug, I responded, “I know. The same goes for me.”

“Of course. Don’t be a stranger, eh? Text when you get in?”

“Will do.” With that, I headed out, back to my personal hell.
